The history of horseback riding, also called equestrianism, goes back almost as far as humanity. In its most general definition, it refers simply to the skill of riding a horse.
Horseback riding can be...
- work-related, such as controlling a herd of animals on a ranch
- competitive, such as horse racing, vaulting, eventing, polo, etc.
- recreational, such as trail riding, fox hunting, riding along the beach, etc.
No matter what purpose you want it to serve (fun, practical, exhilarating, relaxing, etc), any type of horseback riding requires training and practice, both for the horse and for the rider.
